Part 1

> Hello fellow wise old souls. This is my first time being adopted by an Owl. Meet Ziggy, my BooBook.
>
> They arrived over a week ago. I came outside one morning and saw them perched on my Ziegler Brown BBQ (hence the name "Ziggy"), nestled underneath a canopy of bamboo. I thought it was a one-off, but it looks like the Zigster is here to stay!
>
> I'm sure many newcomers may have asked this about BooBooks in the past, and apologies if these are repeat questions, but from what I have searched within conversations in our group, various people have mentioned owl boxes. Which is something I considered but didn't realise it was a thing until joining the group.
>
> If anyone could please point me in the right direction for information, or to a previous thread that explains primary considerations and positioning, Ziggs and I would very much appreciate it Habitat coastal NSW if that makes any difference?

Part 2

> Update on the Boobook, "Ziegler Brown" baddest owl in the whole damn town...
>
> Ziggy has made my Ziegler Brown BBQ their roosting spot for a little over 2-weeks now, helpfully providing yard & pest maintenance listening in on many a conversation
>
> Unfortunately I accidentally scared them off yesterday afternoon while moving things close to the BBQ, and it flew off, landing in a nearby tree, hooting objectionably and looking at me despairingly with its large brown eyes as though i had betrayed it
>
> I apologised profusely, not that bird had any understanding of what i was saying, but i was broken- hearted and hopeful that it would be waiting for me again on the BBQ this morning. They weren't...
>
> Since it flew off yesterday afternoon, I randomly started calling "Boo-book" (hence their name) in the hope it understands it is safe here and would come back.
>
> Late this afternoon I could hear a cacophony of birds sounds signalling 'danger' outside. Native mynas, peewee, magpies and crows/ravens. And there was Ziggy! Nestled in a palm tree, under attack.
>
> Its being under attack is how we met in the first place, so I knew the sounds to know Ziggy was back and to investigate/help
>
> Thankfully the yard is very private otherwise I may have looked a little unhinged to the average onlooker, with my umbrella and broom, and when that didn't work to deter the attackers, bouncing a basketball loudly underneath, throwing rocks (i have terrible aim, and no birds were harmed in this story), using a leaf blower in attackers direction, then finally, a hose on jet spray.
>
> It somewhat deterred them but it was inevitable that Ziggs needs the sun to set before it felt comfortable to take flight. They have flown off for now, but i am confident that Ziggs will be back in the morning, roosting on my BBQ again
>
> Lindsay the wildlife warrior was consulted as mentioned in my first post. Instead of an Owl box, he has proposed a non-enclosed sheltered perch to wedge into the bamboo, and see if it likes it... more to come!

Part 3

> Update on Ziggy Brown: Progress! Step 1 of moving from the BBQ to a perch! Ziggy ignored the perch for the first few nights, but when I came outside this morning I was thrilled to see it had wisely taken the option of a free room upgrade! more to come...

*That's the title photo

Part 4

> Update/s on Ziggy. I've been a little slack, but some progress has been made! In between Ziggy's transition from BBQ, to perch, she later got a sheltered, higher perch.
>
> Also, she has been the subject of mobbings several times, such as when she has been displaced and gone out in the daytime.
>
> She disappeared for 2-nights and i was bereft! I have thought of this bird as perhaps my Mum being reincarnated, who passed late last year (hence "she", as there is no way of telling Ziggy's gender until nesting season, really
>
> Anyway, Ziggy reappeared on Mothers Day morning! Though it appears she feels she has outgrown the 'Premiere Suite', and has since preferred to sit atop it. Looking like the owl box proper is the next step
