> Up until recently I was unaware of the large number of subspecies present in Great Horned Owls. On a recent outing I discovered a much paler grey Great Horned Owl than I was used to, mistaking it for a Barred Owl at first. Researching further I discovered there are 20+ different subspecies with this individual being a subarctic Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus subarcticus).

I can pick out when they're different colors, but I don't think I've got any subspecies names memorized. Heck, even a lot of the rare species are hard to keep track of.
