Events taking place to honor National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Day

Tuesday, May 5 is National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ in the U.S. and Canada. Also known in Canada as Red Dress Day.
In 2017, Montana Sens. Steve Daines and Jon Tester introduced the resolution declaring May 5 National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls and it passed in the U.S. Senate unanimously.
Since then, Indigenous nations, peoples and organizations have used the day to bring awareness to all Indigenous women, girls, Two Spirit, and LGBTQI+ people who are missing or were murdered.
Nationwide, American Indian and Alaska Native individuals face rates of physical and sexual violence much higher than any other demographic, according to [data](https://www.cdc.gov/injury-tribal/media/pdfs/2025/06/Violence-Against-Native-Peoples-Fact-Sheet.pdf) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Indigenous communities and organizations will hold events leading up to and following the day.

Tuesday, May 5 is National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ in the U.S. and Canada. Also known in Canada as Red Dress Day.
In 2017, Montana Sens. Steve Daines and Jon Tester introduced the resolution declaring May 5 National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls and it passed in the U.S. Senate unanimously.
Since then, Indigenous nations, peoples and organizations have used the day to bring awareness to all Indigenous women, girls, Two Spirit, and LGBTQI+ people who are missing or were murdered.
Nationwide, American Indian and Alaska Native individuals face rates of physical and sexual violence much higher than any other demographic, according to [data](https://www.cdc.gov/injury-tribal/media/pdfs/2025/06/Violence-Against-Native-Peoples-Fact-Sheet.pdf) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Indigenous communities and organizations will hold events leading up to and following the day.
